ZTL and Parking in Catania

Catania's old town is a restricted traffic zone (ZTL). Here's everything you need to know to drive around without risking a fine.

⚠️ ZTL Zone — Restrictions
  • The old town (Piazza Duomo and surroundings) is a 24/7 ZTL for non-residents
  • ZTL cameras automatically detect unauthorised number plates
  • The fine for unauthorised access is €80–160
  • Rental cars are not exempt from the ZTL
  • Don't blindly follow GPS directions that might route you into the ZTL
✓ How to get around properly
  • Leave the car in a car park outside the ZTL and reach the centre on foot
  • If staying at a hotel in the centre, check whether they have a temporary ZTL permit
  • For parking, use Piazza Borsellino (~3 min walk from Piazza Duomo)

  • For Etna and day trips out of town, a car is very convenient

Book online before you leave
Counter prices at the airport are always higher than booking online in advance. In summer the difference can be 40-60%. Book at least 2-3 weeks ahead with a comparator like RentalCars.com.

Insurance — what to actually cover
Sicilian roads see intense use. Check that your cover includes: Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) with zero excess, tyre and glass cover (often excluded from the basic CDW), and theft. Some premium credit cards cover these risks for free — check beforehand.

Fuel — choose "full/full"
The most cost-effective option is to pick up the car full and return it full (full/full). Avoid the "prepaid full tank" option: it's usually more expensive. Fill up before heading back to the airport — petrol stations in the airport area cost more.

Vehicle size — watch out for old towns
Sicilian old towns have very narrow lanes. Avoid SUVs and large vehicles if you plan to visit villages like Ragusa Ibla, Piazza Armerina or Caltagirone. A compact sedan or city car is ideal for getting around freely.

GPS and offline maps
Download offline maps of Sicily on Google Maps or Maps.me before you leave. Data coverage can be limited in inland areas or on Etna. Rental cars' built-in GPS is often outdated — don't blindly trust directions in the centre.

Document the car's condition at pickup
Before leaving, photograph or film the entire vehicle (including roof, wheels and bumpers) together with the staff member. Email the photos to the company to have written proof of its initial condition. This avoids disputes at return.
